Opportunity or Peril…KT-LG, a Hot Meeting

2nd place KT – 1st place LG to play 3 games in 5 days

Reporter Kim Joo-hee = KT Wiz meets the LG Twins. It’s a big matchup that could determine the outcome of the race for first place.

KT will play a three-game series against LG at its home stadium, KT Wiz Park in Suwon, starting on June 5. It’s a showdown between the ‘scary chasers’ KT and LG, who haven’t lost the lead since June 27.

This is the first time this season that KT, which was hovering in the bottom half of the standings until early June, will face LG in the ‘second place’ spot.

In their most recent meeting, on July 25-27, KT was in the middle of the pack. They won on July 25-26 to stay in fifth place, but lost on July 27 to drop to sixth.

The team hasn’t stopped marching since, with an incredible August that has made them the team LG is most wary of. KT went 19-4 (0.826 winning percentage) in the month of August to leap into second place, trailing first-place LG by 5.5 games after four days.

However, KT faltered to start September. The team lost a three-game series against the Kiwoom Heroes on the first three days of the month, halting its momentum. It’s been more than two months since KT lost four straight games against the LG Electronics on July 6 and the KIA Tigers on July 9.

In the midst of an unfamiliar losing streak, the team is facing LG, a team they need to catch to stay in the race.

A dominant performance in this meeting would be a welcome change of pace and a boost to their chase for the lead. On the other hand, if the team misses this opportunity, they will be in trouble.

For LG, the three-game series against KT is a must-win series. If they capitalize on this opportunity, they will be able to put some distance back between themselves and KT, who have been chasing them, and begin to consolidate their lead.

However, the cruising LG took a hiccup last weekend, going 1-2 against the last-place Hanwha Eagles in a three-game series.

The pitching staffs of both teams will have their work cut out for them when they take the mound on day one.

KT will send William Cuevas to the mound, while LG will send Choi Won-tae to the mound for Game 5.

Cuevas, who joined KT as a substitute in June, has been outstanding this season, going 8-0 with a 2.63 ERA in 12 games. He was especially impressive in the month of August, going 5-0 with a 0.50 ERA in five games.

Even for Cuevas, LG is no easy task.

Cuevas has struggled against LG twice this year. He is winless, giving up 10 runs in 8 innings with an ERA of 11.25.
